Have I ever mentioned that I totally love it up here? Yeah it gets cold, yeah the days can be long, some times there isnt a lot to do, but wow is it ever beautiful. The sky here is so clean looking at night when its clear, its almost like you can reach up and touch the stars. The day light is short with sunrise at about 930 and sun set at 330, but during that short time it is so totally amazing that its worth it.
I just wish that my someone special was here to enjoy it with me.
Well today is what is known as ``Fly Day`` instead of friday, as today is when we start shifting people in and out on rotations. Mine is coming up next week and i cant wait to get home to see family and my new girl Sarah.
Today is also the day that I take on the role of head chef for a week while Rob is out for his week off. Not only do I get his job, but I also get his room, a nice change to have a suite with its own bathroom and no roommate!!

Beautiful day
Well I slept in a little today, all the way till 4am....
Went and had my shower and then outside for my morning smoke. WoW talk about colder than I have ever known! It was -60 with the wind chill.....
The morning routine is getting busier, seem like all the day shift crew is coming in at the same time instead of staggered like before. Thats all ok tho cause I am used to dealing with way more volume than this. My wrist is getting worse each day. The medic here thinks its either a burst vein or possible tendinitis. Oh well good thing I see the doc the morning after I get home. There is NO way that I am going to miss any work over this tho. NOT A CHANCE. even if I have to wear a cast Ill be here!
The sky here is just totally mind blowing at times. About an hour before sunrise the sky here turned the most brilliant colours of burnt orange and green. Once the sun was up there was these really weird things in the sky, Rob came out at one point and told me they were `Sun Dogs`` They are the most beautiful things I have seen in the sky. Reflections of the sun on either side of it. Totally mind blowing and nothing that we would ever see at home.
It warmed up today after the sun came up, all the way to -55 with the wind chill. The snow here is so different from home on the island. Here its all very fine, fine like sugar. Itll blow around on the ground like sand on the desert. Really cool to watch. When i go out for a smoke I wont even notice anything on me till I come back inside and find Im covered in it!
Things are moving fast with my new girlfriend and i am really enjoying it a lot. Like ive said we have liked each other for a long time, years as a mater of fact, and now we can be true to our feelings. Others may not understand and thats OK with me. I know how I have felt about her for a long long time and now I can express it openly. We have so much in common, we can talk about anything and can be so open and honest. Been awhile since ive had that.

life sure has a way doesnt it?

Today has been a totally beautiful day outside, unfortunately its also the COLDEST it has been since getting here. Its -36 out and it sure as hell feels like it. Its too bad almost, cause I would really like to get out there and go for a walk. The sun behind the clouds is just so beautiful today, sunrise (at 10 am!) was just astounding.
was up way too late last night talking to someone special on the computer. Even after we said good night I still couldnt go to sleep, so i went to the kitchen and got myself some left over dinner. Didnt get to bed till about 1030 and still couldnt fall asleep right away. Sure paid the price for it this morning tho. It seems like if i dont get a decent sleep my legs feel totally swollen in the morning and my feet hurt like hell. My left wrist is still killing me big time, I wish i could take a few days off and let it heal, im sure that I am only making it worse by having to use it every day the way I do. Oh well the money will be worth it and then I can take all the time off that I need.

I started talking to a friend yesterday, the woman that offered to pick me up at the airport. Well as it turns out she has had a thing for me for many years, just as i have wondered about her for all these years. We are now both available to see what can happen with us as a couple. somehow we both missed the interest of the other over the years. I have always had an interest in her and now I have the opportunity to explore that. I am really looking forward to coming home now! Its strange how things work out that way. I took Jens advice and asked the gods (universe in her words) to provide me with someone that I could like as a friend and have the opportunity to build something with. seems like the gods have provided just that.

well today was a totally awesome day!
I woke up full of energy and full of good feelings. Dunno what made the difference but i was just in an incredibly good mood all day long. My legs didnt hurt when i got up and I was just feeling great all around.
The kitchen went as smooth as you could ever want this morning. Breakfast shift was easy as it can get and that was followed up by prep for lunch. In the afternoon I did my usual baking routine, squares, cakes, and today I made bread and rolls. What a great day is all I can say.
I got talking today with someone that i have known for many years. she is just out of a relationship as well. Been really good to reconnect with her. When she heard that I was flying home and planning on getting a taxi she offered to come and pick me up, at 11pm! wow thats really cool of her to do. Ill have to find some way to say thanks for sure.

Things to think about

Not too much to talk about today.
Well another day done. This is day number 5, 6 if you want to count the day we got in and started working.
Today was a really relaxed day in the kitchen, we are all settling in to our jobs and going about them as easily as we can. Shane is getting into the grove of his job and seems eager to pick up whatever we can teach him.
When I woke up today my legs and feet were really swollen. I don't know if its from being on them all day or if its from the heat in the room. there is no way to adjust the temp and its bloody hot in here. My wrist is getting worse. When I woke up it was so tight that it felt like a stuck and rusty door hinge right down to the squeaking sound!
Rob is leaving a week early to change the rotation. he doesn't want him and I to be out at the same time, and he wants me in charge when he is gone. So even tho the fellow that is coming in is SUPPOSED to take over for Rob, he will actually be taking over for me for two weeks, the one when Rob is out and then the week that I am out. Oh well at least i get to have more sleep during that week and I get to move into Robs room which is a SUITE instead of a shared room. Nice.
Oh well another day is done and it has been a good one.
OH! Side note. While I haven't been able to dream, or at least remember my dreams at night, I have had a nap the last two days and wow do I ever dream during them!

Permanent position?

well today has been interesting in some ways. Started out as any normal day, damn fing tired and hard to wake up. My legs and feet are feeling hugely swollen every morning as of late and i dont like it at all. went to the kitchen and turned on the equipment, went outside and had a smoke, then back and had my morning shower. Get dressed and head into the kitchen to start the day. All of that in less than 30min. lol
Nice easy morning breaky run, did up eggs benny for the special today.
Had a good conversation with Rob today about the possibility of staying on and working through out the year as a year round employee. He said he was wanting to do the same but hadnt brought it up to HIS boss yet Well a little later HIS boss
Paul calls and wants to talk to Rob about days off and who Rob wants to leave in charge, yeah guess who that is going to be, yup me. So anyway Rob brings up the subject of year round work and Paul tells Rob that if Rob wants a year round job then he has it, but he has to find his own sous chefé1st cook. lol so I guess that this IS going to become a year round gig after all. Hell I dont mind this at all.

A little frosty out

Yesterday was a good day all in all. The weather was nice out so I went for a walk and took some really good pics, including one of my goatee with it all iced up! |What they say about the difference between the damp cold on the island and the dry cold here is so totally true. The only parts of me that were cold were tose exposed to the air/wind. At home i would have been shivering my nuts off due to the damp.
At one point i was walking towards the camp sign to get a pic in front of it when all of a sudden I was nuts deep in snow. I hadnt realized that i was walking on the top of about 2-3 feet of snow! got the pic tho!
My goatee is a little frozen, but it doesnt feel all that cold out.

The view from my room. Thats about as high as the sun will get all day. we are only getting about 5 hours of daylight from 1030am till just after 3.
Because we had another person join the staff as part of the janitorial crew i have had to move into the dishwashers room and share it. that sucks but its not too bad so far. the only reason I had to move is that the new person is a woman. Oh well.
Today has been a good one sofar. Ran the breakfast line with out any problems, and Rob didnt come in until about 8am today. he was up sick again all lastnight,. i have got to say thaty I am getting really worried about him and his health.
So I added a few things to my breakfast menu. I am slowly building it up as i get more organized with it everyday. I made a few new deserts today, lemon merangine tarts and a peanutbutter/creamcheese cake on top of an angle food cake base and topped with melted choclate and whip cream, yummy! Im going to call it the LHL bar, or Lockheart lake bar.
Ive still got 2 hours off till i have to go back and do the diner shift, I might take a nap or go for another walk.
Well its 830pm and ive just finished another 14 hour day in the kitchen, man am i ever enjoying this so far. I wonder if i will still feel the same way once the truckers start rolling thru about the 26th? But so far I am really likeing this and could see myself doing this long term.
Well as i thought Rob asked me today if i would like to take over his position while he is out for his rotation because he wants someone in charge who knows how he wants things done. I told him that i was comfortable doing what ever he wanted or needed me tgo do. So now its up to him to decide what he wants.
Anyway I am going to go and continue watching The X-files "fight the future" and roll some smokes for tomorrw. G'night folks!
